Real Ale Pioneer to open Redhill Beer Festival

Plans for 7th Redhill Beer Festival later this month have been announced – and a very special guest has agreed to open the event.

Running from Thursday, October 27, to Saturday, October 29, the event at Merstham Village Hall in Station Road North, Merstham, will be opened by Michael Hardman founder member of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

Mr Hardman, who lives in neighbouring Reigate, is the obvious choice to perform the opening honours as this year’s event will take the theme of the 40th anniversary of the founding of CAMRA.

Girona Beer Festival

Platja D’Aro near Girona hosts an annual beer festival each October. Centred around Avenida S’Agaro the event gathers around 15000 people each year. The festival features both locally brewed Spanish beers as well as international beers. Being outside the height of the summer season, hotels can be booked during the festival at very reasonable rates. In October the town is considerably quieter but you can expect some reasonable weather and pleasant autumn sunshine.

Beer – just the word itself gives rise to visions of frothing mugs, of chilled drinks and bars and pubs, of a gathering of friends and drinks and barbeques. There are many types of beers available all over the world, and often each country has it’s own favourite brew, and you will find innumerable people who will disagree with the popular choices.

Over 500 real ales, 200 ciders and perries, and a large selection of foreign beers and English wines are expected to be available

Admission £3 Weds-Sat, £1 Sunday for members of CAMRA, EBCU or RURACS.

Britains Best Bitter

Hop Back Brewery’s Entire Stout has been named as Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain at the National Winter Ales Festival in Manchester.

The Wiltshire Brewery’s stout, beat a number of other stouts and ales from across the country. The award was made by a panel of beer writers, members of the licensed trade and CAMRA members.

The winter beer will go forward to the final of the Champion Beer of Britain at the Great British Beer Festival at Earls Court in London in August.

Beer festivals in Spain

Spain is more renowned for its wine than it’s beers, although tourists will be well familiar with the Spanish brewed San Miguel and possible Damm beers. Spain does also have the occasional beer festival which may be worth a visit.

Calpe on the Costa Blanca is the venue for the Spanish Oktoberfest beer festival, while Madrid hosts an annual beer festival at the bullring at the end of October/beginning of November each year. Fuengirola, about 20-30 minutes drive from Malaga is also the location for a beer festival at Calle Tartesios in Late July.

Lemon Dream

Lemon Dream – an ale made by the Salopian Brewery in Shrophire – won the West Midlands Beer of the Year at the Dudley Winter Ales Festival.

The succesful event which was organised by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), was held recently in Dudley near Birmingham

Brewer Wilf Nelson, who developed the recipe, said: “Lemon Dream has developed a cult following.” You can find out more about Lemon Dream and other beers from Salopian Brewery here

Bradford Beer Festival
